Anesthesia for ECT
نویسنده
چکیده
Successful electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) requires close collaboration between the psychiatrist and the anaesthetist. During the past decades, anaesthetic techniques have evolved to improve the comfort and safety of administration of modern ECT. We review the literature and discuss the selection, preparation, and management. Specifically, the general principles and the pre-ECT evaluation are discussed; a review of induction agents, muscle relaxants, anticholinergics, and antihypertensives is included. Particular focus is given to interference with a seizure by these medications (German J Psychiatry 2001;4:33-39).

Background: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is used in the treatment of various medicalconditions such as severe depression, mainly in situations where the patient does not respondeffectively to drug treatment and during pregnancy where drug intake can result in severecomplication for fetus. ECT carried out under general anesthesia, therefore before ECT some physical exam and some lab data is ...

Aim and Background: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is considered as the most effective treatment method for major depression and psychiatric disorders. Significant hemodynamic changes occur in patients treated with ECT and the duration of seizure after ECT is considered as an important factor in the success of this treatment method. This study aimed to compare the effect of etomidate and prop...

Background and purpose: Myalgia is among the relatively common side effects of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). Positive preventive analgesic effects of ketamine in surgical patients have been studied. However, the effects of ketamine on post-ECT myalgia are unclear. This study aimed to examine the effects of ketamine on myalgia in patients with depressive disorder who underwent ECT. Materials...
متن کاملEffects of Lidocaine on the Acute Hemodynamic Response to Electroconvulsive Therapy
ABSTRACT Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) has been used widely to treat psychiatric disease. ECT under anesthesia is associated with hypertension and tachycardia. The cardiovascular effects of ECT were studied after per-treatment of 100 patients with lidocaine 1.5 mg/Kg (experimental group) and saline solution (control), using a double-blind, randomized clinical trial study. There were no sign...

Introduction: Application of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) for the induction of generalized seizure was first introduced in 1938. It is applied for disorders as severe depression particularly for cases which do not respond to drug therapy, or during pregnancy when medication is detrimental to the fetus. The debate on the effect of ECT on blood glucose level is still contradictory. However, st...
